New LAMS List March 2010
The Deputy Registrar of Motor Vehicles advises the list of approved motor bikes and trikes under the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) has been updated. The list has been updated to include bikes previously approved on the New South Wales approved motorcycles for novice riders list.
All motorcycles built before December 1960 with an engine capacity not exceeding 660ml are approved. All scooters with electric powered engines are approved. The complete updated list has been published in Government Gazette no. 10, dated 25 March 2010.

Motorcycle Road Safety Strategy 2005-2010
On a recent ride, Phil Cole spoke to the riders about this strategy plan and the need to develop one for the future. This is the one that is about to expire. This will give you an idea of the importance of having one for the future.

INVITIATION TO DEATH!
Though not specifically designed for motorcycles, this is a recreation of an actual accident that occured in England. This video is used in schools for road safety training. Imagine if you were riding towards this driver on your bike. Imaging how many people it took to sort out the mess. A very confronting video!

MORE INTERESTING LINKS
Here are a couple of links you may find interesting. Liz De Romes’ paper is all about protective clothing for motorcyclists.
One of the things that we can do to enhance our safety on the roads is to update our skills and to continue to maintain them.
One other is to ensure we never leave home without adequate protective clothing.
Liz describes what we need to wear, what to look for when we are purchasing this gear and the ways that protective clothing standards can be mandated in the future so we can be sure that we are buying stuff that will protect us and not fall apart at the first sign of a problem.
Liz is preparing a booklet for the Federal Government to be made available to all powered two wheeled riders in the very near future.
Look out for it when it is finally published. It is being sponsored by the Federal Government in partnership with the Australian Motorcycle Council.

Professor Raphael Grzbieta is the Chair of Road Safety, NSW Injury Risk Management Centre. His paper entitled “Motorcycle Crashes into road safety barriers” was presented to the recently held WA Motorcycle and Scooter Safety Forum. Raphael challenges the concept that road side safety barriers are a danger to road users especially to motorcyclists. It makes interesting reading as he challenges the issue that Wire Rope Barriers are a mortal danger to PTW users.

FRONT NUMBER PLATES FOR MOTORCYCLES: THE AGITATORS
Uncle Damien has some interesting thoughts about those pushing this cause.
"Harold Scruby is the Pedestrian Council of Australia (PCA). Scruby from Sydney and X Melbourne policeman Ray Shuey are prime movers in the push for front plates/stickers/tags for motorcycles and scooters. This 2003 newspaper article on Scruby is an interesting read."

WE PRAYED BUT NO!
We Prayed it would never come to this......
Our prayers have fallen of deaf ears.......
Our research yeilded few facts.............
That would persuade politician.............
Our hearts yearn for his family............
So far from our shores.....................
Yet his death is too many by one...........
Let all politicians and beaurocrats listen.
To the lament of wailing...................
Of those who will be next..................
Until then please pray for his family......
And his loved ones!
If it is abhorrent to die because you go to work
Why should you die because you make one bad choice?
And who will be held to account??

RIDERSAFE NEWS MARCH 2007.
Rumour has it that a politically aware university student visited an MRA meeting. Next day he went out, bought a motorcycle then learnt to ride it. Anyone who knows Harald Lindermann would know that was a long time ago. He can remember when the MRA started Ridersafe and when the government took it over, so read what he thinks they have done with it!

Caught by their own stupidity!
This article went to press some weeks ago, but was brought to our attention by members. The MRA is an association with members in many, many clubs and we can't find any club acting in a manner described in this article. Do you feel the Authorities do themselves any favours by playing with the truth like this? After all, if they know the clubs why not name them? We would love to hear what you think!

WE NEED MORE WIRE ROPE BARRIERS!
This article went to press some weeks ago. The rage it envoked still seeths in the blood of many riders. Are you a RAA member? How do you feel financially supporting an association that encourages road furniture that may remove your head or leg if you make a simple mistake? Are you comfortable that they ONLY see you as a car driver?

PLEASE LOOK TWICE!
The Motorcycle Council of NSW have produced a commercial intended to raise awareness of Motorcyclists. I don't remember seeing this one on commercial TV but if you have fast broadband internet you may click on the link below to watch it. I think it would be too big for a dial up connection. Go to the home page to try a smaller clip.
You might like to discuss this video in the forum. Do you think it detracts from the "wear good gear" argument? Would you do this for the cause?.
